This, the first solo exhibition of Palermo’s work in a publicly-funded venue in the UK, included a number of the artist’s ‘fabric paintings’, which consist of coloured fabrics sewn together in horizontal bands; ‘objects’, which are irregularly-shaped painted canvases and supports; and paintings on steel and aluminium. Sketches relating to many of Palermo’s wall drawings, which were produced for temporary exhibitions and private homes, were also included in the exhibition. Due to their fragility, Palermo's artworks rarely travel, which made this Serpentine Gallery retrospective a unique opportunity for British audiences to see the work of one of the most influential artists of the last forty years.
