Summer Show 2 [1971]: The History of Art: 5 More Chapters

The Serpentine’s second show during the summer of 1971 showcased young contemporary artists and lighthearted titles relating to art history.

This was the second of the Serpentine Gallery’s exhibitions for the summer of 1971, a series of group shows – showcasing young contemporary artists including William Tillyer, Alan Miller, George Hainsworth, John Loveless, and Gordon Richardson – with lighthearted titles relating to art history.

For this exhibition, William Tillyer showed his recent etchings, including Box Office, Grid A, Charlie Brown Was Here and Acacia Sunrise in the Print Gallery.

Alan Miller’s work was presented in the Centre Gallery, while George Hainsworth showed works including Venus Figure in the South Gallery. John Loveless was in the West Gallery and presented Dervish 8, among other works. Gordon Richardson was in the East Gallery and displayed works including Cycloid.
