William Kentridge

Serpentine South Gallery 21 Apr — 30 May 1999 Free

This exhibition was the first major survey in Britain of William Kentridge’s animated films and related works on paper.

The exhibition focused on three important bodies of Kentridge’s work: his series of seven films created from 1989-1998, Ubu Tells the Truth (1996-7), and the recent Ulisse: ECHO scan slide bottle (1998).

Kentridge, a distinguished South African artist, studied politics and African culture. His varied pursuits include drawing and print-making, animation, puppetry, theatre and opera, in which he has served as actor, writer and director.
