Educators were invited to join artist Adam James to imagine different ways of being together in school using strategies from Nordic live action role-play (larp).
Participants explored difference, acceptance, trust and empathy through role play and thought about how larp could be a useful approach in schools.
James talked through his 2016 Moving Up commission and the development of the Here is the Place classroom resource made in collaboration with Year 6 pupils from Gateway Academy, North London. Through the project, children created a game about living and working together, using movement, mapping and making. Here is the Place can be read as a rehearsal for a more democratic form of school and society.
The workshop was open to anybody working in schools or interested in working with children and young people.
Toolkits were available for free.
Moving Up was a series of workshops in which artists, teachers and children came together to reflect on the transition from primary to secondary school.
The projects created a temporary space where children could develop the tools to support one another and think about how schools could be better.
