Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2014
The Serpentine is delighted to present this catalogue to accompany the 2014 Pavilion, which has been inspired by Radić’s sketchbooks and process—the design of this book mirroring his practice. With an essay by Fabrizio Gallanti and a conversation between the architect, Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
In response to its site in Kensington Gardens, this year's Pavilion takes its inspiration from the tradition of the English garden folly and in Radić’s earlier projects, particularly Mestizo Restaurant, Santiago (2005-07), a building similarly supported by large boulders and The Castle of the Selfish Giant (2010), a papier-mâché model inspired by the famous children's story by Oscar Wilde.
In 2001, the College of Chilean Architects named Radić the leading Chilean architect under thirty-five years of age. He received the Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard award in 2008, was named honorary member of the American Institute of Architects in 2009, and was granted an achievement award from Universidad Mayor de Chile in 2013. His practice ranges from commissioned public buildings and domestic structures to architectural experiments inspired by what he calls ‘fragile constructions’. Radić has participated in a number of architecture exhibitions worldwide, including the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale.
