On the occasion of her exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Etel Adnan has created two unique Limited Edition wool tapestries.
These tapestries, titled Summer and Playground, were made using Adnan’s original, previously unseen tapestry designs made in the 1960s and were produced by HENI Productions. Both of the tapestries demonstrate Adnan’s commitment to the use of colour, shape and perception to create abstract compositions, landscapes or cityscapes.
From the 1960s onwards, alongside her painting, drawing and written work, Adnan started making her first tapestries, inspired by the feeling and colour of the Persian rugs of her childhood which she spent in Beirut, Lebanon. Having attended a course run by the legendary weaver Ida Grae, Adnan wove and dyed wool herself and wrote ‘Notes on Weaving’, a text that was published in a literary magazine in Lebanon, Les Cahiers de l’Oronte.
Adnan’s tapestry designs are a separate dimension of her practice. Never translating her existing paintings into tapestries, she uses specific designs for her monumental and colourful textile works which celebrate the vibrancy of the wool and remain close to the spirit of the Turkish kilims in their use of vivid colours.
