The Magazine Sessions 2016: Celia Hempton, Tor, with Sam Hempton, Mary Margaret Rinebold and Thea Smith

Taking place monthly during spring, winter and late autumn, The Magazine Sessions is a new series of experimental and immersive events taking place in The Magazine at the Serpentine North Gallery, presented in collaboration with Fiorucci Art Trust and with the participation of The Magazine restaurant. In May, Celia Hempton presented Tor with Sam Hempton, a sound performance and meander through the deep web with the participation of Mary Margaret Rinebold and Thea Smith.

Celia Hempton was born in Stroud, UK in 1981. She lives and works in London. Sam Hempton is a musician and songwriter from Nottingham. He is co-founder of cult 90s drone pop band Six By Seven and more recently, Lunar Park.

Mary Rinebold is an American writer who has contributed fiction and art criticism to artists’ exhibitions and books, including those of David Adamo, Peter Coffin, Celia Hempton and Danny McDonald, among others. Her criticism has appeared in Artforum, Artforum.com, Flash Art, MAP Magazine and Art in America. Between 2009 and 2014, she co-founded and co-directed the curating office Kunstverein NY. She recently completed her first novel, The Smell.

Thea Smith is a writer and editor; she studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths and is completing her MA in Critical Writing in Art and Design at the RCA. Her MA thesis is on ‘Portals’ with an emphasis on technology, architecture and the body. She is co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of SALT. magazine.
