Cross-currents in Swiss Art

Serpentine South Gallery 9 Mar — 8 Apr 1985 Free

While German, Italian, and French artists had been relatively well represented in London shows, little had been seen of their Swiss counterparts.

This exhibition sought to rectify this imbalance with an exhibition of six Swiss artists. This was the first time any of the artists apart from Martin Disler had exhibited in London.

Works presented in the exhibition included Miriam Cahn’s Das wilde Lieben (Savage Loving) installation, in which she depicted images of women, and a 10-minute video showing her hurling plasticine on the floor creating what she called “feminine arms, missiles, twisted weapons”.

Jean-Frédéric Schnyder exhibited a selection from the series Berner Veduten (Bernese Sights), which comprised nearly 120 small oils executed between September 1982 and October 1983. Each picture was completed in a day directly in front of the motif.

The exhibition was curated by Richard Calvocoressi.
