John Gibbons: Sculpture

Serpentine South Gallery 1–31 Mar 1986 Free

An exhibition of John Gibbons’ sculptures, including Homage, Tomorrow, Place of Dreams, and Desire.

Showing at the Serpentine Gallery at the same time as Frank Bowling’s and Clyde Hopkins’ paintings was an exhibition of John Gibbons’ sculptures. For Gibbons (b. 1949), the experience of architecture – whether ruined castles or prairie grain silos – has long had an important influence on his steel sculptures, which were assembled from discarded industrial elements and forged into emblematic temples or shrines. Works displayed in the exhibition included Homage, Tomorrow, Place of Dreams, and Desire.
