Karen Kilimnik’s exhibition created an elaborate world of romance and illusion through work conjuring fairytale ballerinas, mystery writers, rococo palaces and ghosts.
The exhibition featured over 50 of Kilimnik’s paintings and drawings from the past decade, as well as more recent installations within site-specific environments, inspired by the artist’s fascination with historical allegories. While her paintings often recall the work of painters from the 16th through to the 19th centuries, Kilimnik’s mise-en-scène approach to the exhibition was inspired by specific rooms in stately homes, horse riding, Tudor architecture and the occult.
