On the occasion of Cao Fei's exhibition at Serpentine Galleries, Serpentine Cinema is delighted to present a series of the artist's films screening across the UK.

Prison Architect takes inspiration from the sombre histories of the Victoria Prison, located in the earliest penal structure complex built in Hong Kong under British rule. Filmed on the site of the original prison and commissioned by Tai Kwun, the museum that now occupies this same complex, the film follows a dialogue across time and space between a former prisoner and an architect. By using the physical space of the prison as a metaphorical complex to understand wider notions of freedom and captivity, Prison Architect asks questions of visible and invisible imprisonment and the relationship of humans to their built environments.
