Artist Adam James discussed his practice and recent projects.
James considered how Nordic larp (live action role play) radically influenced his approach to arts-education, choreography, participation, film-making and sculpture. His work examines otherness, empathy and objects as the alibi for exchange through the immersive and collaborative structure of larp.
James was commissioned by the Serpentine Education Team to develop the 2016 Moving Up programme with Gateway Academy in Westminster, North London. Working in partnership with theatre director Jamie Harper and children in Year 6, he used strategies from larp to create a temporary space for children to develop the tools to support one another.
Unwritten Handbook was a seasonal series of conversations with artists commissioned through Education and Projects at the Serpentine Galleries.
