Serpentine Galleries is delighted to present a selection of unique Polaroid photographs by Duane Hanson. Throughout his forty-year career, Hanson created lifelike sculptures portraying everyday Americans. The hyper-realistic nature of the sculptures results directly from Hanson’s artistic approach. Using materials such as polyester resin, autobody filler and bronze, he cast figures from live models in his studio, paying attention to every detail, from body hair to veins and assembling the figures with clothing and accessories.
Highlighting the uncanny realism of his work, these photographs feature a combination of original models posing in his studio as well as his sculptures in the final stages of production. This selection of historic Polaroids show both models and artworks in progress, many of which are also included in the Serpentine Sackler Gallery exhibition, such as the archetypal figure of the Cowboy, workers from the large-scale installation Lunchbreak, Man on Mower and Children Playing Game.
These photographs offer a fascinating insight into Hanson’s working practice and his unwavering commitment to depicting the human form and human condition.
Each of the ten available works comes framed.
