This exhibition featured a collection of William Tucker’s sculptures from 1970 to the year of the exhibition, 1973.
William Tucker RA (b.1935) was born in Cairo to English parents and studied sculpture at St. Martin’s School of Art in the late 1950s, where he later taught. A few years after his exhibition at the Serpentine, Tucker moved to the USA, where he became an American citizen in the mid-1980s.
A modernist sculptor working in materials including fibreglass, wood, steel, plaster, and bronze, in 2010 Tucker was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the International Sculpture Center.
The Serpentine Gallery exhibition, which was his first major public solo show, included pieces shown at the 1972 Venice Biennale as well as his most recent sculptures, revealing a range of Tucker’s formal, thematic and aesthetic interests.
