This was the first major exhibition in a public gallery in the UK dedicated to the late American artist Dan Flavin – an artist well known for his installations of fluorescent light.
The architecture of the Serpentine Gallery inspired the selection of Flavin’s work displayed in the show. Each selected piece engaged with the interior architecture of the gallery, both transforming and being transformed by the space it inhabited.
Works in the exhibition included Flavin’s earliest installation, The Diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi) (1963) and examples from one of his most recognised and sustained series, “Monuments” to V. Tatlin (1964-82).
