Fred Williams: The Pilbara Series 1979–1981

Serpentine South Gallery 24 Jan — 24 Feb 1988 Free

In 1979, CRA Ltd., an Australian mining and mineral company, invited artist Fred Williams to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where the Hamersley iron ore mines are situated.

Williams found inspiration in the region and visited the Pilbara twice, photographing, sketching, and absorbing what was, to him, an entirely new and exciting vision of Australia.

After two years in the studio, Williams completed the Pilbara series. These were his last works before his death in 1982, and formed the Serpentine Gallery’s exhibition of his work.
