Heatwave 1991

Serpentine South Gallery 19–21 Jul 1991 Free

Over three days, artists from Britain and abroad installed, performed and talked about their art in this exhibition of Live Art and installation work.

This was the first of three annual Heatwave events/shows organised by the Serpentine Gallery.

Ten artists and artist groups were invited to participate in Heatwave 1991. Two Live Art events were presented as part of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT ‘91). One was Jerzy Kalina’s installation for the Serpentine, Cathedral, which became the site for his performance Welcome to Poland. The other was Rosa Sanchez’s piece Natura Morta. A new work by Gary Stevens entitled Name was also commissioned especially for this first edition of Heatwave.
