Since 2000, the Serpentine Galleries have commissioned some of today’s most renowned architects to build their first structure in England. Open to the public throughout the summer months, the Serpentine Pavilion offers a pioneering way for its audiences to physically experience world class architecture. After 16 years of ambitious projects, the Serpentine Pavilion has become established as one of the most anticipated events in the global design calendar.
The Build Your Own Pavilion Young Architects Challenge is an international competition for 8-14 year olds to design a small scale model of a flexible outdoor structure. After a successful first year, the competition expanded in 2016 to include a workshop tour, international submissions and alongside the traditional model entries, digital design and CAD models too.
The platform and workshops give an insight to the basic principles of architectural design and workshop students are given the Pavilion brief and a toolkit that begins with sketching by hand, working with simple modeling materials and progressing to 3D design and print technologies. The Build Your Own Pavilion website enables young people to upload their own designs for a Pavilion to an online gallery, gain insight and learn about the architectural process from the world’s leading architects, download tools for designing and building their own Pavilions, explore past Pavilions and follow the Build Your Own Pavilion UK tour.
This year's competition closed on 9 October 2016. Designs will be judged by a panel of experts including the Serpentine’s Directors and the 2016 Pavilion architect Bjarke Ingels, with a selection of the best designs showcased on the platform and in the media. The winners of the 2015 competition were 10 year-old Jasmine and 13 year-old Nahida.
