Artist Paul Maheke invited educators to come together to discuss what makes a perfect school.
Maheke discussed his 2015 Moving Up commission developed in collaboration with Year 6 pupils from Gateway Academy and the development of The Perfect School?, a classroom game designed to be used by teachers and children to facilitate an exchange about their concerns and to rethink how schools can be. The project drew on the lived experiences of children navigating the education system and their relationships with teachers.
Through the workshop, educators imagined and discussed school structures and new possibilities for being together in school.
The workshop was open to anybody working in schools or interested in working with children and young people.
Moving Up was a series of workshops in which artists, teachers and children came together to reflect on the transition from primary to secondary school. The projects created a temporary space where children could develop the tools to support one another and think about how schools could be better.
