Since 2014’s Extinction Marathon with artist Gustav Metzger, Serpentine has been at the forefront of environmental action and thought. Since the establishment of the General Ecology project in 2018, the Ecologies initiatives nurture Serpentine’s ongoing engagement with ecology, climate breakdown, more-than-human consciousness, environmental justice and complexity in a changing world.
On 5th and 6th April 2025, Serpentine Ecologies will present the latest iteration of the internationally renowned Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC) subtitled The British East India Company on Trial, through a performance trial. After the trial’s ‘hearings’, the space will be open to the public as an exhibition, featuring highlights from the trial, and will re-open as a CICC School featuring talks, performances and discussions.
The CICC is a collaboration between academic, writer, lawyer and activist Radha D’Souza and artist Jonas Staal. It is presented as an installation and performance in the form of a tribunal which prosecutes intergenerational climate crimes committed by states and corporations working together.
