Dis-assembly was a four-year project with the staff and students of North Westminster Community School (NWCS), one of Britain’s largest inner-city secondary schools.
The project explored the legacy of this progressive flagship school, established during the 1960s, on the lead up to its closure in summer 2006 and its transition into Paddington Academy and Westminster Academy.
The Serpentine Gallery commissioned artists Christian Boltanski, Runa Islam, Faisal Abdu’Allah and architect Yona Friedman to work with the 2,000 students to create photographic and film work, as well as a spectacular large-scale architectural project which culminated in July 2006 with an exhibition and launch event on the eve of the school’s closure.
Runa Islam’s commissioned film, Conditional Probability (25th October–5th November 2006), was exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery.
