French Art: An English Selection

Serpentine South Gallery 7 Apr — 6 May 1979 Free

This exhibition sought to increase British awareness of contemporary art practices in France of the time.

Curators Judy Marle and Sue Grayson travelled to France, where they chose 11 French artists (from all over the country and ranging in age, from their mid-20s to early 80s) whose work seemed substantial, original, and quite different from anything made in Britain at the time.

There was a wide range of work selected, and one of the Serpentine’s galleries was dedicated to paintings from the south of France, featuring the work of five of the participating artists.
