A free introductory workshop to Theatre of the Oppressed with Implicated Theatre and theatre director Frances Rifkin.
“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it.” – Augusto Boal, Games For Actors & Non-Actors
Theatre of the Oppressed is a potent tool in the facilitation of group work and community empowerment. Founded by the late Brazilian director, scholar and activist, Augusto Boal, it is used in over 70 countries as an educational and organising method and a means of personal and social transformation. Theatre of the Oppressed workshops enables people to develop the skills and faculties to liberate themselves and others. It creates space for a rehearsal for life and is a way of analysing the power dynamics of our society and our personal relationships.
In 2011, Implicated Theatre emerged from workshops held at the Centre for Possible Studies in partnership with the Migrants Resource Centre. Instigated by artists from no.w.here and working with theatre director Frances Rifkin, the experimental workshops focussed on migrant rights exploring the relationships between political speech and action; the self and the collective; and voice and silence. Through establishing close relationships with migrant rights groups, migrant labour unions and ESOL teachers, Implicated Theatre has created theatrical interventions and developed training tools, videos, sound performances and curricula inspired by real-life struggles, highlighting issues of social justice.
We will be holding a free introductory workshop for anyone interested in learning more about the project and Theatre of the Oppressed techniques. This workshop introduces participants to the foundations of Theatre of the Oppressed, as well as a host of games, techniques and exercises underpinned with the theory and philosophy of Boal’s work.
The workshop is open to all, but places are limited.
To book a place please send a brief expression of interest (100 words max) to Projects team, Amal Khalaf [email protected] and Elizabeth Graham [email protected], about why you would like to attend the workshop by Friday 11th May.
Participants will be contacted no later than Saturday 12th of May to confirm attendance.
