In Conversation: Refik Anadol with Mira Lane and Doug Eck, moderated by Kay Watson
In celebration of his exhibition, Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive, Refik Anadol will be in conversation with Mira Lane, Senior Director, Technology and Society, Google and Doug Eck, Senior Research Director, Google DeepMind. Moderated by Kay Watson, Head of Arts Technologies, Serpentine and introduced by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine, the panel will explore the ways in which technology alters our perception of the natural world and our experience of time and space.

About the Exhibition
A pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, artist and technologist Refik Anadol is known for his innovative media works and large-scale public installations.
Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive, Anadol’s first major institutional solo exhibition in the UK, envelops viewers in immersive environments that utilise years-long experimentation with visual data of coral reefs and rainforests and showcases the creative potential of AI.

Participant Bio(s)
Refik Anadol (b. 1985, Istanbul, Turkey) is the Director of Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles and Lecturer at UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts from which he obtained a Master of Fine Arts. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Istanbul Museum of Modern Art; and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Anadol has participated in the Venice Architecture Biennial (2021); NGV Triennial in Melbourne (2020); Ars Electronica Linz (2017); and Istanbul Biennial (2015). His works have widely been presented internationally, including recent exhibitions at Kunsthal Rotterdam (2023); Arken Museum of Modern Art (2023); ArtScience Museum, Singapore (2023); Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2022-23), Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf (2023); Centre Pompidou-Metz (2022); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2022); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2022).
Mira Lane is the Senior Director and Founder of the Envisioning Studio at Google. Mira runs a multidisciplinary team focusing on showcasing the inspiring potential for advanced technologies to benefit people and societies. Prior to Google, Mira was the Partner Director and founder of Ethics & Society at Microsoft. There, her team was responsible for guiding technical and experience innovation towards ethical, responsible, and sustainable outcomes. Mira holds numerous patents across platforms and collaborative interfaces. She has a background in art, computer science, and mathematics. Her art has been featured in film festivals and galleries.
Doug Eck is a Senior Research Director at Google, and leads research efforts at Google DeepMind in Generative Media, including image, video, 3D, music and audio generation. He also leads a broader group active in areas including Fundamental Learning Algorithms, Natural Language Processing, Multimodal Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Computer Vision and Generative Models. His own research lies at the intersection of machine learning and human-computer interaction (HCI). Doug created Magenta, an ongoing research project exploring the role of AI in art and music creation. He is also an advocate for PAIR, a multidisciplinary team that explores the human side of AI through fundamental research, building tools, creating design frameworks, and working with diverse communities.
