John Bellany: Paintings, Watercolours and Drawings 1964–86

Serpentine South Gallery 29 November 1986 — 11 January 1987 Free

A large retrospective of East Lothian painter John Bellany’s work, featuring his popular work My Father (1966).

This exhibition of Bellany’s work featured his figurative paintings, watercolours, and drawings produced between 1964 and 1986. Bellany’s images of the sea, of fisherman, and of his family drew on both his personal experience and on a wide knowledge of the Old Masters and the myths and symbols that sustained them. One popular work featured in the exhibition was My Father (1966), depicting the artist’s father in his role as a fisherman.

The artist died in August 2013 at the age of 71.
