John Panting: Sculpture 1940-1974

Serpentine South Gallery 2–28 Sep 1975 Free

This was a survey exhibition of the work of sculptor John Panting.

This was a survey exhibition of the work of New Zealand-born, London-based sculptor John Panting (1940-74). In spring 1975, after Panting’s tragic death in a motorcycle accident the summer before, a group of his colleagues asked the Serpentine Gallery to mount an exhibition, ranging from pieces Panting made while he was a student at the Royal College of Art to the last works he completed.

The resulting exhibition consisted of a selection of Panting’s available works completed between 1965 and 1974, seldom seen in Britain beyond his inclusion in a number of major group exhibitions.
