Ken Currie

Serpentine South Gallery 17 Jan — 10 May 1987 Free

The series of oil paintings presented by Ken Currie in this exhibition tell stories of the Scottish working class in the 20th century.

Currie used the relationship between an elderly activist, who had been involved in the struggle for jobs and better conditions, and a young unemployed man growing up in Glasgow as a cantilever for this show. The paintings told a dynamic and hopeful story, in spite of hardship and struggle.

This solo exhibition took place the same year that the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art presented its groundbreaking survey exhibition of emerging Scottish art, The Vigorous Imagination, in which Currie also featured.
