This was the first solo exhibition by Louise Bourgeois in a public institution in Britain.
French-American artist Bourgeois (1911-2010) was slow to receive recognition as an artist – not until her retrospective exhibition in 1982 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York did she really begin to gain significant recognition on the international stage. Without any fixed style, material, or medium, her output was relatively little known at the time. She has since become considered one of the most important artists of the past century.
Stuart Morgan curated this, Bourgeois’ first British show.
