Radio S.O.N.A.R.

Part of Youth Forum

Using listening as a tool, artist Anton Kats and a group of 15-16 year olds from Westminster Academy came together to develop Radio S.O.N.A.R.

Radio S.O.N.A.R. focused on Church Street in central London as a site of research, and used listening as a way to open up and create discussions about issues that affect many inner-city neighbourhoods – regeneration, gentrification, unemployment, immigration and the polarisation between generations.

One of the outcomes of the project was a radio play written and recorded by the group. Set in the future on a fictional street inspired by Church Street, the play draws directly on the opinions and thoughts of local workers and residents that were gathered during interviews conducted on Church Street by the Radio Sonar group.

Youth Forum is an ongoing partnership with Westminster Academy. Young people aged 14-15 years old and artists work collectively to identify issues and explain the changes they would like to see happen in the world.
