Summer Show 1 [1979]

This was the first of three instalments of the Serpentine’s open-submission summer show for 1979.

For this summer show, twelve artists were selected for inclusion.

Works in the exhibition included sculptures by Michael Lyons who wrote: “…the sculptures in this exhibition were developed from two-dimensional collages into free standing works, juxtaposing drawn planes with more rugged pieces, which often retain some remnants of colour.” He made one piece, Lenten Cover, specifically for the exhibition.

All the photographic prints James Ravilious included in the show were taken during the previous six years while he was a photographer at the Beaford Centre, where he was tasked with compiling a record of present-day life in North Devon to complement a large collection of copies of old photographs taken in the same area around the turn of the 20th century.
