Artist Theaster Gates brings his monastic musical order, the Black Monks, to the Serpentine Pavilion 2022, Black Chapel.
The ensemble’s sonic experiments explore the specificity of Black sound through a fluid combination of Southern musical traditions, jazz, blues, soul, and more. In this performance, the Black Monks offer a meditation on sound with nods to ascetic practices.
Ground yourself in the sacred and spiritual architecture of the Serpentine Pavilion, witnessing the Black Monks’ unique sound amplify throughout the drum of the Pavilion space and take passage through the central oculus.
The Black Monks are: Theaster Gates (Vocals), Yaw Agyeman (Vocals), Mikel Patrick Avery (Bells and Chimes), Michael Drayton (Keyboard), Marcus Evans (Drums), Benjamin LaMar Gay (Bells, Chimes and Trumpet) and Dwyane Patrick (Keyboard).
