In Conversation: Hans Ulrich Obrist Meets the Artists Shortlisted for the Rolls-Royce Dream Commission

In Partnership with Muse, The Rolls-Royce Art Programme

The biennial Dream Commission is a significant new platform, supporting moving-image works created by emerging and mid-career artists worldwide from Muse, the Rolls-Royce Art Programme. The Commission strives to support this spirit of innovation at a time when it has never been more vital, and it is developed and presented in partnership with two art institutions, the Fondation Beyeler in Basel and the Serpentine Galleries in London.

The international shortlisted artists, Sondra Perry, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Martine Syms and Zhou Tao, tuned in from San Juan and Guangzhou, London and New Jersey to discuss the subject of Dreams: a meeting of Imaginations. From what inspired their work, to their individual approaches when working in the moving image, what followed revealed insights into an evolving, dynamic medium.

The shortlisted artists were selected by an international jury of the art world’s leading figures: Artistic Director of Serpentine Galleries Hans Ulrich Obrist; senior curator at Fondation Beyeler Theodora Vischer; former Director of the Parrish Art Museum Terrie Sultan; Director of the Australian Centre for the Moving Images Katrina Sedgwick and artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien.

Each artist had been nominated by an international team that included: Daniel Birnbaum, Director of Acute Art, Cao Fei, artist, Zachary Kaplan, Executive Director of Rhizome, Pablo Leoìn de la Barra, curator, Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director of M+.
