25 Years of the Serpentine Pavilion

As the annual Serpentine Pavilion commission reaches its 25th edition, our Artistic Director, Hans Ulrich Obrist reflects on its history and legacy.

For a quarter of a century, the Serpentine Pavilion has offered a space where architecture, art and everyday life meet, free and open to all in the heart of Hyde Park. Each commission is an invitation to test ambitious ideas in one of the world’s great public spaces, acting as a catalyst for the architects at a pivotal time in their careers.

Obrist speaks from the 2026 Serpentine Pavilion, ‘a serpentine’, designed by Mexico City-based studio LANZA atelier. Their Pavilion reflects a deep engagement with the local context, materials and lived experience and invites visitors to imagine a more connected, compassionate and creative future.
