Join Serpentine at Tenderbooks to celebrate Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s exhibition catalogue Alienarium 5, followed by a book signing with the artist.

This richly illustrated publication is a journey through Gonzalez-Foerster’s multisensory environment staged at Serpentine (14 April – 4 September 2022), made up of visions, apparitions, holographic illusion, and a Virtual Reality and scent experience stretching over several gallery spaces and their surroundings.

Inspired by the exhibition’s theme of welcoming encounters with extraterrestrials, the exhibition catalogue takes the form of an album. It features contributions from prominent long-time collaborators of the artist, internationally acclaimed novelist Enrique Vila-Matas, and writer, philosopher and curator Paul B. Preciado, as well as writer and academic Tatiana Kontou.

A comprehensive conversation between Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist gives further insight into her decades-long research into science fiction and apparitions. Designed by John Morgan studio, the publication also includes a poster of Metapanorama, one of the central works in the exhibition, as well as lyrics of the artist’s band Exotourisme.

Artist Bio

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (b. 1965 in Strasbourg, France) metabolises cinematographic, literary, architectural, musical and pop references to create spaces that investigate the implicit neutrality of artistic practice and display.

Beginning with her participation in the 1992 Exhibit A: Eight Artists from Europe and America and in Serpentine’s Poetry Marathon in 2009, Gonzalez-Foerster has worked closely with the Serpentine for many years. In this time, she has appeared together with writer Enrique Vila-Matas for Park Nights (2010), was involved in the Garden Marathon (2011), Memory Marathon (2012), Transformation Marathon (2015), GUEST, GHOST HOST: MACHINE Marathon (2017), and has done a live concert and EP Release of Exotourisme (2018) for which she also collaborated with musician Perez.
