The 2024 Park Nights season kicked off with the UK premiere of North Korea Dance from renowned choreographer, Eun-Me Ahn and her dance company on Friday, 28 June and Saturday, 29 June. The piece explores the differences and similarities between North and South Korean dance and imagines a possible future beyond the border through shared movements. Bringing out the beauty in stark contrasts and celebrating the grotesque and the minimal, the subtle and the extreme, Eun-Me Ahn’s compositions captivate audiences worldwide. For Park Nights 2024 she invited her audience on a very intimate journey to follow a dance between two divided nations.
Internationally renowned South Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn is known for her experimental performances that play with traditional notions of Korean dance and often integrate non-professionals. She founded Eun-Me Ahn Company in 1988 after completing her studies in Contemporary Dance at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul. In 1991, she moved to New York to study at the Tisch School of the Arts, returning to South Korea ten years later to continue her investigations of social dynamics, intergenerational exchange and the relationship between North and South Korea. Forming a distinct visual language, Eun-Me Ahn’s productions are amplified by vividly coloured costumes and set designs that continuously change and evolve throughout her performances.
