Art and Advanced Technologies at Serpentine
Serpentine South Education Space
20 July - 6 September 2026
Free

This summer, Serpentine’s Education Space becomes an open and evolving archive of our work at the intersection of art and advanced technologies. Part library, part listening room, part research space, we invite visitors to gather, browse, sit, read, listen, work, and add to the space alongside us.

“Deliberately open-ended, cross-disciplinary Creative R&D environments… have an important role to play in social transformation.” (Future Art Ecosystems 5; Creative R&D)

Made possible through support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, processing… marks a significant moment in the preservation and activation of Serpentine’s pioneering work at the intersection of art and advanced technologies. Here, advanced technologies refers to both emerging and established technologies that may be familiar to many, but whose long-term cultural and societal implications are still largely unknown, including blockchain, artificial intelligence and game engines. The display brings together audio recordings, photographs, publications, digital commissions, and other materials relating to art and advanced technologies at Serpentine. Through collaborations with interdisciplinary practitioners, Serpentine explores how technological systems can become tools for critical inquiry, collective imagination and worldbuilding.

processing… takes its name from the message shown during an in-progress computation. It reflects the ongoing, evolving nature of Serpentine’s work with art and advanced technologies. Over time and through its now-dedicated department, Arts Technologies, Serpentine produces resources, alternative models, prototypes, governance design, infrastructural experiments, and tools for systemic change. Across these materials runs a shared commitment to worldbuilding and critical inquiry.

Honouring this spirit, processing… is an active archive, constantly updating with the addition of new, audience-generated materials. Here, you can discover how Serpentine supports work that anticipates and shapes emerging cultural and technological futures. In opening up the archive, resurfacing and recirculating selected materials from across the years, we invite you to gather, browse, sit, read, listen, work, and add to the space alongside us while we continue to process…

Biography & Credits

Serpentine Arts Technologies places art at the forefront of the technological innovation shaping our world. For over a decade, the department has championed artist-led experimentation through groundbreaking commissions, experimental cultural projects, and research. By bringing artists and audiences together, it explores how advanced technologies can become tools for new possibilities. Operating as both a studio and a research lab, Arts Technologies’ production-led model enables artists, curators, producers, researchers, strategists, and technologists to experiment with emerging systems as pathways for worldbuilding and critical inquiry. Working with technology in real time, the department asks and tests the urgent questions of our era.
