As part of the General Ecology project, and on the occasion of Pierre Huyghe’s exhibition, Serpentine Cinema presented a programme of artists’ films addressing humans’ impact on the biosphere and the environment.

The fourth and final part of this series turned its attention to questions of care, and features a talk by Flora Katz on Huyghe’s 2012 work Untilled and his preparatory notes, as well as a screening of artists’ films, including works by Pierre Huyghe, Peter Nadin, Pedro Neves Marques, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Aimée Toledano, Natsuko Uchino and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Talk by Flora Katz, Pierre Huyghe, Ways in Untilled

Flora Katz is an art critic, curator, and PhD student at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Her research revolves around Speculative Realism philosophies and contemporary art, with a focus on Pierre Huyghe’s work. It unfolds through workshops and writings. Her curatorial projects include Nothing Belongs to Us: To Offer, Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard / Art Contemporain (2017), Editathon Art+Feminisms, Lafayette Anticipations (2015-17), Odradek, Instants Chavirés (2015), Paris. She is part of the project Free University at DOC, Paris. Recent publications include: “Les notes de Pierre Huyghe” in Dits et écrits d’artistes (2018) and “Pierre Huyghe, Ian Cheng, spéculation dans l’art contemporain et stratégies de décentrement” in La genèse du transcendantal (2017).

Part 1 of this screening series, On Earth, Structure and Sadness and Part 2, On Earth, Poison and Place, took place on 1 November and 10 December 2018 and Part 3, On Earth, Missing and Memory, will be taking place on 14 January at Peckhamplex, London.

On Earth and Gardening is curated by Lucia Pietroiusti (Curator, General Ecology) and Kostas Stasinopoulos with Holly Shuttleworth. Advisors: Pierre Huyghe and Filipa Ramos (co-curator, The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish and advisor on the Serpentine’s General Ecology project). Presented in collaboration with Vdrome.

General Ecology is the Serpentine’s galleries’ long-term, ongoing investigation into complex systems, interspecies landscapes and environmental questions, which manifests through research, publications, exhibitions, study programmes, radio and events.
