Join us for a panel discussion on machine learning and its aesthetic capacity with Mercedes Bunz, Leif Weatherby, Nora Khan, Joanna Zylinska & Murad Khan

Machine learning technology (a subset study of Artificial Intelligence) has profoundly advanced in the past few years and is becoming a mainstay in artistic practices. Through a discussion on machine learning and its aesthetic capacity, we seek to answer: What new aspects does the technical framework of machine learning bring to art-making? And conversely, what can artworks that use AI point to in AI research and development?

Creative AI Lab

The Creative AI Lab is a collaboration between Serpentine R&D Platform and the Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London to produce knowledge for cultural institutions, artists, engineers and researchers on how to engage AI/ML as a media.

NYU Digital Theory H-Lab

The NYU Digital Theory H-Lab seeks to develop and maintain the broad-based, interdisciplinary conceptual framework necessary for understanding and transforming the way we live in and with the digital.

Mercedes Bunz is the Creative AI Principal Investigator and Senior Lecturer in Digital Society at the Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London. Her research explores how digital technology transforms knowledge and power.

Murad Khan is a PhD student at University College London and a Visiting Practitioner at Central Saint Martins. His research explores philosophies of noise and individuation through the operations of compression, distortion and error in computational systems.

Nora Khan writes criticism on emerging issues within digital visual culture, experimental art, and music practices and philosophy of emerging technology. She is a professor in Digital + Media at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

Leif Weatherby is an Associate Professor of German at New York University where he co-founded the Digital Theory Lab. His writing and teaching centre on the digital, Romanticism and Idealism, and political economy.

Joanna Zylinska is Professor of New Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, a media theorist and a visual artist. She is currently researching perception and cognition as boundary zones between human and machine intelligence.
