More Than Human
Shifting from the centrality of the human species to visions where human and non-human cultures, rights and thrivings are interdependent.
Through publications, projects and programmes, Ecologies convenes disciplines including science, art, literature, anthropology and sociology to promote a greater understanding of the planet as an interconnected, multispecies environment in which cultures, languages, forms of consciousness and worldings are both human and non-human. Through the long-term research project, The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish, Serpentine investigated positions that undermine anthropocentric assumptions by demonstrating that what we think as uniquely human is in fact inextricably more-than-human. From fungal intelligence to plant consciousness, from cetacean language to the complex societal structures of termites and birds, our more-than-human companions meet us in complex and fascinating places.
